About Us

Grand Central Properties (“Grand Central”) is a locally owned and managed commercial real estate development and holding company. We are proud to call Cochrane our home! Our unique geographic location on the banks of the Bow River, near the Rocky Mountains and in close proximity to the city of Calgary allows us to enjoy many economic, recreational and cultural advantages. Grand Central is a community leader in providing state of the art facilities in the retail, administrative, banking, medical and emergency services sectors. Since its inception in 2000, Grand Central has been meeting the commercial real estate demands for one of the fastest growing communities in Canada.

Our Shareholder Group

Grand Central is comprised of a diverse group of community leaders including Queen’s Counsel, Builders, Land Developers, Development Consultants, Dentist, Lawyers, Chartered Accountants, Realtors and Business people. Former Town Councillors, Chamber of Commerce Executives of all positions, service Club executives and volunteers, and community achievement award winners are commonplace amongst Grand Central’s shareholders.

Each individual shareholder brings a unique perspective and tremendous wealth of experience that includes developing residential communities (such as West Valley and Gleneagles in Cochrane), building commercial centers, providing legal or financial advice, and a host of other disciplines. A deep rooted commitment to excellence, along with their vision, foresight and leadership qualities are valuable assets that compliment their expertise.

Grand Central is managed by Randy Mabbott (President) and two part-time support staff, who are responsible for the day to day operations of the company. The President is in regular contact with an active Board of Directors which meets once per month.

Hank Biesbroek has served as the President of Grand Central Properties Inc. since its inception in 2000.

A journeyman carpenter by trade, Mr. Biesbroek has resided in the Cochrane area for more than 30 years. A long time entrepreneur, he is the President of Terryanne Developments Limited which developed and built the Riverside and West Valley communities and is also the former owner of the Smitty’s Family Restaurant.

In addition to overseeing various business ventures, Mr. Biesbroek served on the Cochrane Town Council and various committees for 5 years (1983-87). He served as Chair for the Cochrane Centennial Celebrations Committee, the Cochrane Partnership for Economic Development and served the Chamber of Commerce as Vice President, President and past President (6 years). He is the only recipient of 3 community awards presented by the Chamber of Commerce: Ambassador of the Year, Community Builder of the Year and Citizen of the Year.

Along with many other local board and volunteer positions, Mr. Biesbroek also pursues volunteer efforts in both Mexico and Honduras.

He and his wife Terry enjoy spending time with their sons and grandchildren.

After graduating from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Honors) and receiving his Chartered Accountant designation, Mr. Gryzko became the founding partner of Gryzko Harper Bouw Chartered Accountants in Cochrane. Now retired, he has more than 30 years of experience providing personal and corporate tax advice and business advisory services to a wide variety of small business clients in and around the surrounding communities.

Mr. Gryzko was a member of the Paper Burden Reduction Initiative (2005-2009). This was a joint private enterprise and government committee mandated with advising the government on the issues of red tape for business.

He a founding member and past president of the Cochrane Rotary Club and his volunteer service has included other not-for-profit boards in Cochrane including the Cochrane Centennial Committee and the Bow Rivers Edge Campground Society. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of Grand Central Properties Inc. since 2007.

Randy Mabbott serves on the Board of Directors and as President to Grand Central Properties Inc. In addition, he is a lawyer with the law firm Mabbott & Company.

Mr. Mabbott has extensive experience acting for individuals, private and public companies, locally, nationally and internationally. He has experience with startup private companies through taking companies public. He also has extensive experience in technology issues having served as General Counsel to a technology company publicly listed on the NASDAQ exchange. Mr. Mabbott is a registered trade-mark agent with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, a former member of the Licensing Executive Society, past Chairman of the Canadian Bar Association, Technology and Intellectual Property Subsection (Calgary) and past member of The American Society of Corporate Secretaries.

Mr. Mabbott is also very involved in community activities. He was a member of the University of Calgary Senate – a bridge between the university and the wider community. Mr. Mabbott is a former President of the Cochrane and District Chamber of Commerce. He is past Chairman of the Student Financial Assistance Appeal Committee, Calgary, the former Chairman of the Town of Cochrane Subdivision and Development Appeal Board and received the commemorative medal for the 125th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada in recognition of significant contribution to compatriots, community and to Canada. Randy is also a community member of the University of Calgary Faculty of Nursing advisory committee.

Terry Freeman joined the Board of Directors in 2010, bringing with him a wealth of experience primarily in the energy services and construction sectors.

After ten years in public accounting he joined HMW Construction Ltd., a predecessor to Flint Energy Services Ltd. Until March 2007, he held the senior financial role in Flint, leading the mergers and acquisitions aspect of the company’s growth and completing approximately 25 acquisitions. In April 2007, Mr. Freeman assumed the role of Managing Director for Northern Plains Capital, a private equity firm focused on early stage investments in the energy services and industrials sector. Northern Plains was very successful, returning 215% on its third fund. In 2012 he left Northern Plains to participate in individual private energy services and real estate opportunities.

In addition to serving on the Board of Directors for Grand Central Properties Inc., Mr. Freeman also holds positions on the Boards for McCoy Corporation (oil field manufacturing), The Crossing Company (underground boring and tunneling), Treadmark Properties (real estate), GLM Tanks (hydrocarbon storage) Corrosion and Abrasion Solutions Ltd. (corrosion prevention) SCT Oilfield Inc. (heat treating and threading of oilfield tubulars), Enerbuilt Technologies Ltd. (flameless heat services) and Graham Construction (civil and industrial construction).

Mr. Freeman has held positions with a variety of other not-for-profit and commercial ventures.

Mr. Freeman received his Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta in 1982, his Chartered Accountancy designation in 1985 and was named a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in 2012. He is also a graduate of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) Directors Education Program, the CICA In-Depth Tax course, the ICAA CFO Leadership program and is a former member of the Young Entrepreneurs Organization (YEO).

Mr. Loeppky joined the Grand Central Properties board of directors in June 2016, bringing with him a well-rounded knowledge base of construction management, business administration and finance. Mr. Loeppky currently holds the position of Vice President & Director of Finance at 4D Group Inc. (formally ICS Group Inc.)

After completing technical training in 1992 at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) as a certified Journeyman Carpenter, Mr. Loeppky co-founded Son-Key Construction. Son-Key started out as framing company, specializing in residential and multifamily condominium projects, but quickly evolved into a complete Custom Home Builder.

In 1999 Mr. Loeppky co-founded ICS Group Inc. (formerly Innovative Climate Solutions). Along with his business partners, he expanded ICS Group Inc. to five locations, servicing Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. In 2009, ICS Group was named as the RBC Small Business of the Year recipient. In 2013, Mr. Loeppky was instrumental in the successful acquisition of DryAir Manufacturing Corp, (ICS Group’s primary equipment supplier). In 2015, Mr. Loeppky played a key role in the successful sale of ICS Group’s rental and service divisions to Aggreko, the world leader in temporary power generation solutions.

Along with serving on the board of directors for Grand Central Properties Inc., Mr. Loeppky serves on the Board of Directors of British Columbia Wilderness Tours (a land company which controls over 470 acres of land within the city of Kamloops), 4D Group Inc., DryAir manufacturing Corp. as well as several commercial building holding companies.

Mr. Loeppky has lived in Cochrane for over 20 years with his family and has been active in several community sports programs.

Mr. Kingsmith has lived and worked in the Cochrane area for over 34 years. He started working in the residential construction industry in 1980.

In 1985 he founded a small general contracting business which evolved into Kingsmith Homes. Under Mr. Kingsmith’s leadership the home building company grew from almost nothing to become one of the region’s premier home builders.

Kingsmith Homes won Industry sanctioned awards for outstanding service each and every year since inception of the company.Additionally, in both 2012 and 2013 the company won the prestigious “New Home Buyer’s Choice Award” for Calgary and region.

In 2014, Mr. Kingsmith entered the company into an educational partnership with Rockyview School District called the “Building Futures Program”. Each year through this program about 30 local grade 10 students spend their entire school year building two new homes under the mentorship of Kingsmith Homes staff and achieve full credits for the year. This partnership was only the 2nd one of its kind for the building trades industry at the time and currently has entered its third successful year. Through the building company, Mr. Kingsmith has contributed to and participated in several local community projects and causes.

In 2014, Mr. Kingsmith structured and executed the successful sale and succession of Kingsmith Homes to a former employee who he mentored. Currently Mr. Kingsmith owns a real estate investment and rental management company.

Mr. Kingsmith and his wife Karen enjoy water sports, attending sports events and travel.

In November 2012, Larry founded Citrus Capital Partners Ltd, a financial advisory firm focused on small to mid-sized companies in Western Canada

Larry has an extensive background in domestic and international business, real estate development, resource extraction, oilfield services, energy research, environmental management and franchise development.

Mr. Shelley holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary, a Chartered Accountant designation, an ICD.d designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors, as well as a CF designation from the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Mr. Shelley is extremely active in the community and has served in senior leadership roles in several organizations. He is a former Chairman of the Community of Cochrane Recreational Development Committee, and was a Director of the Cochrane Minor Hockey Association.  In addition, he has held the term as President of The Rotary Club of Calgary.  Larry has been the recipient of a number of awards including Outstanding Achievement Award, 3M Canada Coaching Award, Municipal District of Rockyview Citizenship Award.  He was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship for his work in the Rotary Club of Calgary. Larry was also the 2017 recipient of the Haskayne School of Business Alumni Achievement award.

Larry is a fifth generation Calgarian, residing here with his wife of 38 years, Laura Lee and their four adult children.
